From LGBTQ to a Life-Altering Encounter with God: Elizabeth Woning’s Story

culture & society identity & purpose Jul 03, 2025

When Elizabeth Woning walked into a Pentecostal youth service, she was a self-described feminist, openly gay, and battling bipolar disorder. What she didn't expect was to encounter a God who not only knew her personally - but wanted to heal the very parts of her story she'd written off as permanent.

"I didn't pursue God to change my sexuality. I pursued Him because I realized I didn't know Him."

- Elizabeth Woning

Elizabeth wasn't searching for religion. She was already in seminary, studying theology openly gay, and part of a church community that embraced her. But something was missing. Despite her intellect, education, and confidence in her identity, she felt spiritually dry - and emotionally fractured.

That all changed in a small rural church, where she witnessed young people encountering the Holy Spirit in ways she couldn't explain. It wasn't hype. It was real. And it sparked something in her that academic theology never could.

"I wasn't convicted of sin. I was convicted of unbelief."

- Elizabeth Woning

This encounter led Elizabeth down a path of profound surrender - not to a set of rules, but to a relationship. She began re-reading Scripture, not to prove a point, but to discover who God truly is. It was never about changing her sexuality to fit into a Church. It was about meeting the God who loved her enough to heal her from the inside out.

What followed wasn't easy. There were questions, grief, inner wrestling - and eventual healing. Over time, Elizabeth experienced transformation not just in her spiritual walk, but in her mental health, identity, and even her relationships. Her journey led to marrying her husband, leaving behind the LGBTQ identity that once defined her, and stepping into a wholeness she never imagined possible.

Now, as co-founder of Changed Movement, Elizabeth helps others who are navigating questions around sexuality, gender, and faith. She quips churches to handle these conversations with both compassion and clarity - and she's actively involved in public policy to ensure that stories like hers are heard, not silenced.

Whether you're a parent of a questioning teen, a pastor seeking wisdom, or someone wrestling with your own identity - this conversation is for you. Elizabeth's story is more than a testimony. It's a powerful reminder that God still heals. He still restores. And He still rewrites stories.
